Molien – The Fate of the Nostromole By Mike Strick

Mike Strick is one artist/customiser that I admire. For one he always makes his work unique, even if its inspired by something, his detailed work and fine tuning everything, never over the top yet has an impact. look at this prime example of a custom figure inspired by the Space Jockey in Alien, built on Kerry Dyer’s resin Mole XL toy for the RE-MOLED show. It just pops right out at you, something you always remember and never forget.

Mike blends in the MOLEXL into a creepy looking alien and using the MoleXL shape into alien arms was a cool idea. Mike also uses smaller Mole’s to make the space men helmets, neat idea right?

Something about the figure made me think of the Space Jockey from Alien. The iconic Space Jockey was a huge fossilised alien pilot fused into its seat and controls. It was designed and sculpted by the late HR Giger. Since I realised it was only a passing resemblance, I did a quick sketch before looking up reference material so that I could keep hold of that initial mental image. On looking at movie stills, it quickly became clear that my sketch underestimated the scale of the pilot seat and ‘telescope’ but I felt that it had enough of the essence of the form that it would be recognisable. I reworked the design slightly, incorporating a few prominent features of the actual sculpture.
