Examine the absurdism of extraordinary ordinary life Nicasio Fernandez is an American emerging artist. His surrealist oil paintings unravel everyday life into absurd territory, resulting in an image that is strange yet familiar. Within Fernandez’s paintings is a cast of hyper expressive otherworldly figures who are delicately grotesque with over-exaggerated limbs and unnatural hues of flesh.
Fernandez’s usage of a high key palette and animated esthetics creates a visual connection to the works of Peter Saul, Judith Linhares and the Chicago Imagists. Fernandez’s paintings incorporate slapstick and dark humour, blue-collar workers, a blend of high and low culture, metaphors, and an exploration of mental and physical endurance.
By continuing to depict goofy and vibrant beings, Fernandez hopes to open up more narratives and interpretations for the works.“ It came from the idea of chance and trust, like the legend of William Tell shooting an apple off his sons head. Having this trust in someone to shoot an arrow, or throw a knife in this case, invokes a fear that I wanted to play around with.”This time the character jumps out from the flat landscape into a functional sculpture.“ During this time of social isolation, we’re so engrossed with our phones that I started to think about analogue communication and the meaningfulness of something like writing a letter. With this project, I hope more people will be enticed to write letters to one another.”
