Sway Gallery London is proud to present an exciting, 100 purrcent cat-themed pop-up, introducing over 200 items, including collectables, kawaii crafts and folk toys, artworks, as well as Japanese woodblock prints!

The event is a collaboration between Manami Okazaki, Japanese culture maven and author of Land of the Rising Cat: Japan’s Feline Fascination, which will be released and sold on the opening night, and Tiger Tanuki, Japanese art dealer and curator.
Manami introduces a unique selection of traditional folk crafts from across Japan, ranging from wooden kokeshi dolls to porcelain manekineko (lucky cats). For all the cat and Japanese pop culture lovers, contemporary art pieces, including sofubis (collectable figurines) and artworks, will be provided by the acclaimed artist Konatsu, whose creations cause her die-hard fans to queue for long hours, just to be able to claim a lottery ticket which provides them with a chance to purchase one of her creations!
Kaori Mitsushima, a Prague based Japanese artist, will also present a series of cat inspired artworks painted with simple but strong lines, reflecting a deep connection to Japan.
A great number of the cat-themed artisanal crafts and rare collectables will be exhibited and available for purchase at Sway Gallery London.

WHERE: Sway Gallery 70-72 Old StreetLondon, United Kingdom

WHEN: 6th- 27th September 2019

The Sway Gallery is a welcoming exhibition space and concept boutique located in the heart of Old Street, specialising in Japanese arts and crafts. Our first gallery opened here in October 2016, and was quickly accompanied by another one in the vibrant Marais district of Paris. We aim to introduce exceptional Japanese craftsmanship to Europe.
Our gallery welcomes every conceivable style of Japanese art and craft; so much so that passers-by say the gallery seems to have metamorphosed each time they look inside. Previous exhibitions have ranged from photography to ceramics, from architecture to fashion, visiting the worlds of calligraphy, painting, drawing, woodblock prints… the variety is endless. We also are a source of encouragement for fresh talent, a number of our artists having held their debut with us.
A cultural hub, Sway challenges the traditional concept of a gallery with our myriad of Japan-related events. Perhaps one day you will push open our door and discover a modern Japanese sake bar, on another occasion you might be greeted by a traditional Japanese living room complete with tatami mats. To discover what universe we are currently enjoying, please keep an eye on our Facebook page where you can find details about each event. For our ephemeral pop-up shops, it’s best to be informed!
Our concept store offers carefully curated items that add a touch of elegance to everyday modern living. “Swaying” from East to West, new made-in-Japan creations are delivered regularly. Some of them began their life as raw materials in Europe, only to pass through the hands of talented Japanese artisans and back to us. Come in and see the results of these “swaying” spirits! for further details.

Special thank you to Ben Hart from ToyCon UK /Ko-Re Ko-Re
