Back in 2015 the one and only Patrick Wong revealed his vinyl figure titled “ST 1200” (read HERE). Juxtaposing the iconic Stormtrooper helmet with the music producer’s favorite 12-bit sampling drum machine, the Emu Systems SP 1200. This kind of Star Wars / Classic Drum Maschine mashup quickly became a staple of his art, recognisable instantly by fans all over the world.
Back to 2019, Patrick reveals a brand new rendition of this iconic work. Bigger! And we mean BIGGER!!! A 4ft wallmount sculpture, yes, 4FT!!!
‘When you change a letter, the meaning shifts. ST1200 is a play on the word SP1200, the late 80s-early 90s sampling drum machine by Emu Systems. In the way sound-art can conjure up an image in your mind, the ST1200 reminds you of the opposite – a kind of sound in your mind. It is the grit, the crunch, and the ringing that is emblematic of the S-P. The resulting artwork is a fusion of nostalgias for the SP1200 and the original 1977 Stormtrooper helmet design. Star Wars has always been a part of hip hop as seen in documentaries like Style Wars and this piece continues in that tradition. It is an enlarged follow up version of the original sculpture created in 2015.’
Media: Fiberglass, wood, acrylic, urethane varnish.
