Phlogistonic Kinetic Disruptor Dueling Pistol Set by Dok A

Something a little different this evening, from our favourite Doktor! Dok A has been busy watching Blade Runner 2049 to get his latest inspiration for a commission from a long-time Dok A collector. Creating this set of Dueling pistols in his own style from a couple of Tomenosuke Blade Runner Blaster resin kits. Dok A, a lover of Blade Runner himself, wanted to keep it clear as to what the source material was but pulling it straight into his Mechtorian world.

I retained or replaced most of the notable pieces of hardware on the pistol such as the power switch and several of the knobs with vintage Brass hardware. I extended the muzzle to create a “Flintlock” type profile while keeping the relationship between the barrels.

I added new parts using vintage blown glass to the top of the gun to change the overall silhouette but still keeping the original outline clearly visible. I added a Quartz crystal power source at the rear suggesting a mechanism for this “Ray-Gun” to function.

I also retained the wonderful clear warm orange grips from the original, too lovely a detail to replace. But I used the transparency of the material to disclose a gear mechanism within as if the workings were trapped in Amber.

I added some embossed flourishes and rivets to create the right retro-futuristic feel and then finished up with a suitable Brass and Copper look, weathered and aged.

The box is a re-purposed vintage find with added Brass corners to increase the weapon case feel. I also added an internal label in a vintage style including a few more Blade Runner references. And punched the P.K.D initials into the plate on the box lid, referencing the original creator of the Blade Runner material. I also included some tools and a tin of spare parts in the case as real duelling sets often came with such additions.

I know how this pistol design is quite a Holy Cow to some prop collectors and replicators and I am sure that I will upset some of them by messing it up in this way. But I should point out that I too love the design of the original and hope my spin on it is enjoyed in the spirit it was intended. I am sure many new viewers will be discovering Blade Runner with the release of the new movie Blade Runner 2049 this month and hopefully, that will bring more fans to appreciate the deep design in the classic original movie.

Such a great custom piece from the good Doktor! What do you think? Have you seen the new Blade Runner 2049 movie yet? We are hearing good things!
