MadelonParticipantI don’t customise too many toys, but I like the Citadel paints that are usually used for Warhammer models.

Mark-AnthonyParticipant
Whatever you are comfortable with really. It comes down to a good base coat and sealant. Cel vinyl paint used to be a wonderful paint because it was used readily on acetate and it had nice opacity to it. I’ve seen spray paint, Golden paints, Molotow, and even basic acrylics. It all comes down to the artist really.

David StevensonParticipantI agree it’s down to what you prefer. Acrylics offer good versatility and good colours. Brand wise I do use a mix of games workshop and golden for paint but also used Montana spray paints. A good primer coat is good to help bond to the toy. Hope this helps

Ghost Fox Toys (Michelle and Gino)ParticipantI used to use whatever acrylic paints I had, but did not like the buildup. So I switched to Vallejo paints, especially the game color. I think that’s what it’s called. I use them for hand painting as well as for airbrushing. You just have to make sure to use a small amount of the vallejo thinner and flow liquid so it’s more smooth.

MadelonParticipantNot really paint, but related to the topic: any recommendations for varnishes? I find it so scary to put a varnish on things and I’m not quite sure about which matt and clear ones are often used.

Mark-AnthonyParticipantVarnish usually ends up being a spray version that you like the finish of. Best thing to do is create some test pieces with the paints you use and try out the different varnishes you have in hand. It’s hard to get that far in a piece, only to lose what you wanted to a crappy drying clear, weather induced cloudiness, or even excessive orange peeling. Durability wise, automotive type clears(sprayed with an airbrush or paint sprayer) are probably the best and have different finishes(but costly). Rattle cans work well too, but I still go back to paint compatibility tests and final look once completely cured. Testing can fun too, imo.

MadelonParticipantHaha, yes I definitely want to prevent that from happening! Testing sounds like a good idea. I may get some different options when I start painting pieces and try it out.
Specific brand recommendations still welcome btw!

AlexParticipantI use a combination of Apple Barrel, Model Masters Acryl, Tamiya Sprays, and Tamiya brush on.
For Primer I exclusively use Rustoleum brand. I used to use Krylon but they’ve since changed their formula and it no longer dries on PVC plastics (what you usually find on limbs and heads)
For sealers, I start with a base of Testors Dull Cote spray, then use brush on Testors Gloss Acryl for any other details that need to be gloss. Of course if the figure is glossy all over, I’ll just use a Testors Gloss Cote spray.
